My daughters health has declined to a point where I had to make the difficult decision to close our doors.
I will not be selling or breeding any birds at this time.
However, I have left up the site for education.
This is as of April 5, 2013
Winter is almost over! I cannot think of a better gift companion for someone special, than a cockatiel. I currently have several pairs set up, and my waiting list finally has openings . Although I am taking names, I have faith there will be baby's soon. Thank you all for your patience and please check back in frequently. As with any holiday, make sure your pet stays safe.
Hello and welcome to Sweet Pea Aviary
I am so happy you stopped in! Please let me introduce myself. My name is Ruth and I have had a burning passion for cockatiels for more than two decades. Between extensive research and many years of experience, I have finally opened my home and aviary to the public. I am a small time hobby breeder of N.C.S. banded pet and show quality cockatiels, located in Lewiston, Maine.
The mutations I currently have available for breeding are as follows; Normal Grey [all splits] Cinnamon, Lutino, Pearl, Pied, and White Face [all varieties], and even a few rares including Sex Linked Yellow Cheek, Dominant Yellow Cheek, Pastel Face, and White Face Dominant Silver. My personal favorites are the white faced and the pied variety.
Each bird you purchase will come with a hatch certificate which will give you the day the bird was born, a pedigree of at very least the parents and possibly the grandparents if known. The bird will also be banded with a dated closed band, and you will receive a sample of food as well and reccomendations of what to feed and where to find it. When I have them available I will also include a catalog from Dr's. Foster and Smith. It is an excellent resource of information, food, toys, cages, medicine, etc. and I use them personally for all my pet needs and highly recommend them. I will also include a copy of one of the past issues of the Journal, an N.C.S. booklet with articles on cockatiels, feeding tips, and so much more. I have applications available for N.C.S. membership, should you decide to join as well, but there is no pressure or obligation.
All baby's born here receive a well care visit at 6 weeks of age, and again as needed. They are, to the best of my knowledge, healthy and free of any significant disease or virus when they are sold. It is however the buyers responsibility to quarantine the new bird, from any other bird[s] that may be in your home for a period of at least 30 days [45 is recommended]. This is to insure that they can acclimate to any new pathogens that may be present in your home. Each bird has different immunities to different pathogens, and this insures that each bird stays free of the others disease, and build up and develop a natural immunity over time. Please remember to wash your hands thoroughly between birds, and always do the feeding, water changing and cage cleaning on the newest bird last. This standard precaution is for the safety and well being of all the birds in your home, and should always be done no matter where you get your birds from, or how "safe" you may feel they are.
Because I only want to offer you the best, I keep my home, cages and birds clean, and neat. I only feed the best seed, pellet, and fresh food, and keep them free of drafts and direct sunlight. I take the birds out every day for human interaction, and offer toys that are safe as well. I would ask that you give them at least that when you take them home. I can assure you that if you do, along with a loving, sweet, and happy bird you will also have a friend for many years to come.
